I learned about keratin hair straightening a long time ago, and since then I have lost my peace. I monitored the market, waiting for the appearance of “one-day” compositions, and struggling with my own fears :) And in October last year, I decided, and did it, instantly becoming an adherent of keratin. When straightening my hair, the master used Innoar brand products, the Proffession line, and my review is based on the result of using these particular products.

Keratin hair straightening is a godsend for those who have a porous hair structure (this is when the hair has a fuzzy curl, is difficult to style, fluffs and stands on end in high humidity). Well, for those who are tired of natural curls or want to have straighter and shinier hair. After keratinization, the hair becomes straighter, shiny, easy to style, and, what is important, they behave absolutely calmly in wet weather, remaining in the form in which they were before going outside (oh, this is such a happiness! - see the photo in the very end of post).

Features of straightening compositions

Now there are a huge number of brands and types of compositions for keratin hair straightening. Basically, they are divided according to the speed of impact on the hair (the well-known composition of CocoChoco, for example, it is strongly recommended to keep it on the hair for 3 days, while you should try to keep the hair straight all the time - do not clean behind the ears, do not stab, do not wet). Well, in terms of chemical composition, but here I am not a master of drawing parallels. Let me just say that “according to legend” the hair becomes straight due to the fact that the keratin contained in the straightening composition fills the hair scales, and, under the influence of high temperatures, “solders” and thereby straightens them.

In fact, as they explained to me, all formulations, except for sealing keratin, contain formaldehyde, which, under the influence of temperatures, temporarily affects the structure of the hair, making it heavier and straightening it. The so-called “new generation formaldehyde-free formulations” are nothing more than a marketing tale that masks this chymosis in the composition under other names, and completely formaldehyde-free formulations do not exist today. The keratinization process looks like this: first, the master washes your hair with a special “deep cleansing shampoo”, which (sort of) opens the hair scales, which helps the straightening composition to penetrate deeper into the hair. Then the hair is dried to dryness with a hairdryer, divided into thin strands, and a straightening compound is carefully applied to each strand. Next, the hair is dried again with a hairdryer, after which the master goes through each strand with a hair straightener about 10 times, at a temperature of 220-230 degrees.

Then there are two options: either your hair is washed, washing off the composition, dried and styled as usual, or (if you have very hard stubborn hair, like mine) they send you in peace, punishing you to keep your hair straight for three hours, do not stab, do not clean behind the ears, and constantly comb. And after the specified time - wash your hair with plain water, and style. To be honest, it would be much more comfortable for me to immediately complete the procedure with the master - but if it is necessary, then it is necessary.

Immediately after straightening, my hair looked great - it was very bouncy, shiny, heavy and nourished. But when I washed the composition from my hair, I found that a slight wave remained at the ends. I asked the master why this happened, and received an answer, which is probably due to the fact that I have very difficult hair (which is quite real), although I still tend to think that the master squeezed the straightening composition on me a little.

Keratin hair care and styling

Hair care after keratin straightening is quite simple:

1. You need to use only sulfate-free shampoos, i.e. shampoos that do not contain sls, sodium lauret (lauril) sulfate. These are, for example, all Natura Siberica shampoos, almost the entire range of shampoos with Iherb (Giovanni, Avalon Organics, etc.), Bubhen children's shampoo without sls, Estel Oniym and many others. Balms, conditioners and hair masks can be anything.

2. It is better not to be deceived by a healthy look of hair, and continue to use high-quality masks and hair oils.

3. After washing, the hair must be dried with a hair dryer, and on a warm or hot airflow. If this is not done, the hair will return to its natural wave, but, exhale, until the next hair wash. I checked it, traditionally, on myself :)

4. If necessary, hair can be curled in any way possible, but be prepared for the fact that keratin-weighted hair does not keep its shape for a long time, use varnish or other means of fixation.

5. If the smoothness of the hair is not enough for you, you can use an iron or pull the hair for brushing (as I did, my poor hairs)

6. Before visiting the sea beach, it is advisable to apply thick oil to the length of the hair: this is due to the fact that sea water salts wash out keratin (did not check).

7. Keratinized hair can be dyed, but masters recommend doing this before the procedure so that the keratin “seals” the dye in the hair and keeps the color longer (did not check).

How long does keratin last on hair?

As I said, keratin “took” my hair not completely. But, speaking in general, my hair stayed in good condition for about 1.5 months, then the composition began to wash out smoothly. Now the 5th month has gone, the hair in the laid state is still smoother than it was before, less frizzy in wet weather, but the curls and general fluffiness, of course, returned to me.

Masters, speaking about the durability of keratin, are very vague in their formulations, and promise the preservation of the result for a period of 2 to 6 months. This is explained (traditionally) by the individual structure of the hair. Although, in fact, almost all manufacturers guarantee the durability of their compositions on the hair only for up to 2 months. Marketing is marketing

Does keratin damage hair?

It's been quite a while since I started the treatment, and here's what I've noticed: in general, the hair looks healthier than before the treatment, smoother to the touch, and a little shinier than it was. But there is one big "BUT": the hair has become a little sluggish and lifeless, both to the touch and visually. I don’t know how to explain it more precisely, but I can definitely say that there is no need to talk about the healing effect of straightening compounds. Formaldehyde is formaldehyde.

Who is not suitable for keratin hair straightening?

There is information that keratin “does not take” natural blondes with dense, coarse hair - the hair simply does not straighten. But, as far as I know, compositions created specifically for this type of hair have now begun to appear.

This procedure is also not recommended for those who have liquid hair - keratin will visually make them sleeker, nail it to the skull and it will look so-so. Well, the owners of hair similar to mine - you should be careful. “Take something” will most likely take you, but perhaps not completely, and any question will be answered “well, you have such a complex hair structure” :))

Cost of keratin straightening

The cost of the procedure depends on several factors: the experience of the master, the composition on which he works, the length and suppleness of your hair.
In general, 1 keratin straightening procedure for medium length hair (up to the shoulder blades) from a private master in Moscow can cost from 4,500 to 8,000 rubles.

The cost of the compositions is also quite different, but, speaking very generally, the cost of a good set (shampoo + straightening composition) will cost you about 4,000 rubles for a trial set (200 ml) and about 10,000 rubles for a prof. set (1000 ml).

Summary
I really liked the look and behavior of my hair after keratin straightening, I even seriously thought about getting trained and doing it myself. And I definitely fell into the “sect” of keratinized ones :) However, given the certain “lifelessness” of hair, I am still afraid to often straighten my hair in this way, and I think that I will do straightening no more than 1-2 times a year.
